University-Wide SDGs Education for all Students
An-Najah National University maintains a formal, university-wide commitment to ensuring that every student receives meaningful, relevant, and applicable education on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This commitment is grounded in the University’s Sustainability Policy, which identifies teaching and learning for sustainability as a core institutional principle applicable to all students, and its Sustainability Plan, which commits ANNU to enriching sustainability learning across the formal and non-formal curriculum and advancing education as a central component of its cross-institutional sustainability agenda.
This commitment is implemented and supported institutionally by ANNU’s Sustainable Development Office through four mutually reinforcing pathways: (1) integrating sustainability and SDG-related learning outcomes, concepts, practical applications, projects, and community-based learning across the full curriculum; (2) providing a mandatory Community Service and Sustainability Course for all students, supported by sustainability-literacy assessment; (3) offering accessible SDG-focused electives, projects, workshops, training programmes, and co-curricular learning opportunities; and (4) enabling student associations to translate classroom knowledge into practical action, innovation, volunteering, and community impact.
ANNU’s university-wide framework is reinforced by its comprehensive approach to Climate Science and Environmental Sustainability Education. Climate science, environmental responsibility, and sustainability-driven innovation are embedded across accredited academic programmes, credit-bearing courses, laboratory and field training, applied research, professional learning, and community-engagement activities. These structured learning pathways span undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing-education levels and equip students with competencies in climate mitigation and adaptation, renewable energy, environmental governance, circular economy, water and waste management, sustainable urban development, resilient infrastructure, and ecosystem protection. This demonstrates how ANNU translates its institutional commitment into discipline-specific and practically applicable education across the University.
These pathways are further strengthened through the Office’s SDG Training Academy, an open-access educational platform that provides expert-led sustainability education and practical capacity-building for students and staff. Its expanding portfolio of free sustainability training courses addresses the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainable development, including climate change, sustainable energy, circular economy, environmental governance, responsible business, social inclusion, community development, sustainable cities, and impact assessment.
Learning is reinforced through an ongoing programme of SDG-related events and training workshops, providing opportunities for students to learn from specialists, address real-world sustainability challenges, observe practical applications, and develop solutions through experiential and community-based activities. Together, these integrated, mandatory, optional, and applied learning pathways ensure that every ANNU graduate develops sustainability literacy, understands the interconnected nature of the SDGs, and can apply this knowledge responsibly within their discipline, profession, community, and civic life.
Integrated Across the Full Curriculum
An-Najah National University integrates sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals across teaching and learning in all colleges, academic levels, and fields of study. This institution-wide approach is grounded in ANNU’s Sustainability Policy, which recognizes teaching and learning for sustainability as a core University principle, and its Sustainability Plan, which commits the University to providing education for sustainable development and enriching learning across the formal and non-formal curriculum.
According to ANNU’s curriculum mapping for the 2025/2026 academic year, more than 70% of undergraduate and postgraduate courses incorporate identifiable SDG-related learning outcomes, topics, laboratory activities, research assignments, fieldwork, professional applications, or community-based projects. Sustainability education is contextualized within each discipline, enabling students to understand and address the environmental, social, economic, health, technological, and governance dimensions of sustainable development.
This curriculum-wide integration is reinforced through the compulsory Community Service and Sustainability Course, taken by all students, and through the interdisciplinary learning opportunities provided by ANNU’s Sustainable Development Office and SDG Training Academy. Together, these provisions ensure that every student encounters meaningful sustainability education through both university-wide learning and discipline-specific academic study.
Climate Science and Environmental Sustainability Across the Curriculum
A major component of ANNU’s curriculum-wide integration is its structured provision of Climate Science and Environmental Sustainability Education. Climate science and environmental sustainability are incorporated across academic programmes and credit-bearing courses offered by multiple faculties, including Engineering and Information Technology, Science, Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Architecture and Planning, Law and Political Science, and related interdisciplinary fields.
Students engage with sustainability through lectures, assessed coursework, laboratory exercises, field studies, case studies, design projects, environmental assessments, and applied research. This enables students from different academic backgrounds to develop climate and sustainability competencies relevant to their disciplines and future professions.
The following programmes represent—not exhaust—the integration of sustainability and the SDGs across ANNU’s academic disciplines.
