The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) at An-Najah National University, in collaboration with the Seeds Association for Development and Culture, the Palestinian Hydrology Group, and the Palestinian Women Water Network, successfully organized the "Environmental and Water Challenges" conference. This event addressed pressing water and environmental issues, emphasizing the university's commitment to sustainable development goals, particularly in clean water and sanitation.


Held in the Law Auditorium at the new campus, the conference featured notable attendees, including Professor Sameer Abu Aisha, a lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering and ASCE supervisor; Mr. Iyad Al-Aqraa, Director of Student Affairs; Engineer Ali Odeh, Executive Director at the Water Authority; Ms. Iman Dweek, coordinator of the Women Water Network; Engineer Besan Al-Shunnar, a member of the Women Water Network; Dr. Alma Ershid, Director of the Seeds Association; and student Heba Al-Masri, President of ASCE. The event attracted a diverse audience of specialists, experts, and students from various West Bank universities.

The conference aimed to spotlight critical environmental issues requiring immediate action and sustainable strategies for resolution. It highlighted the society's role in promoting environmental awareness and developing practical solutions to challenges faced by communities and the environment.

Professor Abu Aisha remarked, "An-Najah National University stands as a leading institution in Palestine during these challenging times. We take pride in our students' contributions to water, sanitation, and sustainable development."

He further noted, "These issues extend beyond drinking water and air quality; they encompass the impacts of infrastructure, industry, and environmental pollution. We must initiate comprehensive improvements across these areas."

Mr. Al-Aqraa emphasized the university's dedication to supporting meaningful activities, ensuring successful events through resource sponsorship and logistical support. He acknowledged the exemplary dedication of the ASCE and the College of Engineering and Information Technology in facilitating diverse and impactful initiatives.

Dr. Alma Ershid expressed the Seeds Association's commitment to engaging in student and youth activities, especially concerning critical issues. She highlighted ongoing collaborations with the university and local community organizations.

In her opening remarks, student Heba Al-Masri shared the association's mission and activities, stating, "Environmental challenges are among the most pressing our societies face today. At ASCE, we believe in the necessity of collective action to develop innovative and sustainable solutions." She thanked An-Najah National University and the Student Affairs Deanship for their support and commended all speakers for contributing to the conference's success in enhancing environmental awareness and innovation in resource management.

The conference featured a series of insightful lectures from distinguished speakers, covering topics such as "Water Pollution: Sources and Effects on Public Health and Ecosystems" by Engineer Noor Al-Amleh, who examined the health impacts of water pollution; "Environmental Resource Management and Future Strategies" by Engineer Luai Al-Atarash, discussing sustainable management solutions; and "The Environmental Effects of Wars: The Impact of the October War on Palestinian Environment and Water Resources" by Dr. Abdelhalim Khader, reviewing long-term environmental damage. Additionally, Dr. Hafez Shaheen addressed the sanitation challenges resulting from wars and their environmental implications.
