Local Climate Education, Community Awareness and Preparedness

An-Najah National University (ANNU) provides and contributes to educational programmes and campaigns that strengthen understanding of climate change and encourage practical community action. Activities include interactive workshops, school environmental campaigns, youth capacity building and public dialogue on climate risks and responses.

Through university departments, the Community Service Center, student associations and external partners, these activities connect academic expertise with young people, schools and community audiences in Nablus and beyond. They complement the University’s Climate Science and Environmental Sustainability Education and Environmental Education and Awareness frameworks.

Climate Risks, Impacts and Responses

The University’s outreach connects climate knowledge with challenges relevant to Palestinian and regional communities.

Risks and impacts: The December 2025 public dialogue addressed declining rainfall, water stress, heatwaves, flood risks and pressures on agriculture, health and infrastructure.

Mitigation: Youth activities encourage engagement with renewable energy, circular-economy approaches and environmental initiatives, including through LCOY Palestine.

Adaptation and impact reduction: Public education addresses improved water management and resilient urban planning, while green entrepreneurship training develops skills relevant to sustainable agriculture and livelihoods.

Early warning and preparedness: The December dialogue explicitly included early warning systems as an adaptation measure. ANNU’s climate-science education framework also identifies hazard mapping, early warning basics, contingency planning and resilience within disaster-risk-reduction education.

Continuing Learning and Wider Engagement

The University’s Weather Station provides a related resource for meteorological learning, complementing its broader work in climate change education, research and community engagement.
ANNU also participates in CliVEx, supporting climate awareness, climate justice and intercultural dialogue through virtual exchange. The June 2026 closing-workshop announcement reports more than 2,500 young people reached through exchanges and 1,000 participants through facilitation training across the project partnership. These cumulative figures describe the wider project and are presented separately from the 2025 local activities.

Through these complementary activities, ANNU brings climate learning beyond formal courses and supports informed participation in community climate action.
