Empowering Sustainability at An-Najah National University: Student-Led Initiatives Driving Change

At An-Najah National University, students are at the heart of sustainability transformation on campus. Through a vibrant network of student-led societies, initiatives, and volunteer programs, students actively contribute to advancing environmental awareness, climate action, and sustainable development.

These student-driven initiatives empower young leaders to design and implement impactful projects, organize sustainability campaigns, and collaborate with academic departments and community partners. By fostering creativity, leadership, and interdisciplinary collaboration, An-Najah University enables students to become key agents of change in building a more sustainable future.

Together, these efforts contribute to strengthening a campus culture where sustainability is not only taught in classrooms but also practiced through student engagement and real-world action aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

About the Society

The Student Sustainability Society at An-Najah National University is a student-led initiative dedicated to promoting sustainability awareness, environmental responsibility, and sustainable development practices across the university community and beyond.

The society empowers students to actively participate in addressing environmental and social challenges through education, innovation, volunteerism, and community engagement. It serves as a platform where students from different academic disciplines collaborate to advance sustainability solutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Vision

To foster a generation of responsible leaders committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship in Palestine and the wider region.

Mission

The Student Sustainability Society aims to:

  • Promote sustainability awareness among students.

  • Encourage student participation in environmental initiatives.

  • Support sustainability-related research and innovation.

  • Engage students in community-based sustainability projects.

  • Contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Leadership Structure

The society is fully student-led, with support from Deanship of Student Affairs, academic mentors and the university’s sustainability office.

The Student Sustainability Society operates through an elected student leadership structure that ensures effective governance, transparency, and active student participation in sustainability initiatives across the university.

President

Provides strategic leadership for the society, represents the association within the university, and oversees the implementation of activities, meetings, events, and initiatives to ensure the achievement of the society’s sustainability goals.

Vice President

Supports the President in coordinating initiatives and student engagement activities, assists in organizational responsibilities, and assumes leadership duties when required.

Secretary

Responsible for documentation, official communication, meeting coordination, and maintaining records of the society’s activities and decisions.

Treasurer

Manages financial matters related to society activities and ensures that budgets and resources are utilized with transparency, efficiency, and accountability.

Public Relations Officer

Acts as a liaison between the society, the university community, and external partners, strengthening collaboration with local organizations and stakeholders involved in sustainability initiatives.

Media and Communications Officer

Provides media coverage for society activities and manages communication channels including social media platforms to promote sustainability awareness.

Environmental and Energy Committee Chair

Leads environmental initiatives aimed at protecting natural resources, promoting renewable energy awareness, and encouraging sustainable environmental practices on campus.

Education and Awareness Committee

Organizes workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns that promote sustainability concepts and the principles of sustainable development among students.

Activities and Initiatives Committee

Coordinates sustainability-related events, student campaigns, and initiatives that support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Projects Committee

Develops and proposes sustainability-related projects in collaboration with relevant university departments and research centers.

Members and Volunteering Committee

Encourages student participation, recruits members and volunteers, and promotes community engagement through sustainability-oriented volunteer activities.

Governance and Internal Regulations

The Student Sustainability Society at An-Najah National University operates in accordance with the university’s official rules, regulations, and governance framework. The society functions under the supervision and authority of the Deanship of Student Affairs, which oversees its activities and ensures alignment with the university’s policies and strategic priorities.

  • Decision-making within the society is conducted in a transparent and democratic manner, ensuring the active participation of members of the General Assembly in shaping the society’s initiatives and activities.

  • The Administrative Board of the society is renewed annually through elections or interviews, as determined by the Deanship of Student Affairs, ensuring continuous student leadership and engagement. Membership registration is open once per academic year prior to the renewal of the administrative board, with an annual membership fee of 20 NIS.

  • To ensure effective governance and accountability, each committee chair submits periodic reports to the President of the society. The President then provides comprehensive reports—including financial, administrative, and activity reports—to the Deanship of Student Affairs.

  • Members of the Administrative Board receive an official certificate of experience from the Deanship of Student Affairs in recognition of their leadership and service during their tenure.

  • The society is committed to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the university and the local community through a wide range of student-led initiatives, projects, and awareness activities.

  • A dedicated financial account for the society is maintained within the University’s Financial Department to ensure transparency and proper financial management of its resources.

  • To strengthen communication and outreach, the association maintains an official website and social media platforms, which are used to promote sustainability awareness, share activities, and engage students and the wider community.

  • At An-Najah National University, the Student Sustainability Society is recognized as a leading student association of its kind in Palestine, playing a key role in promoting sustainability culture and student engagement in environmental and social initiatives.

  • Committee chairs may form working teams and involve members of the General Assembly when necessary to support the implementation of sustainability initiatives and projects.

Environmental Awareness Workshop and Green Skills Development

The Student Association for Sustainable Development organized an interactive workshop aimed at enhancing environmental awareness and building youth capacities in green practices and sustainability concepts. The workshop focused on empowering students with practical knowledge related to environmental responsibility and sustainable lifestyles.

Exploring Collaboration Opportunities with Nablus Municipality

The Student Sustainable Development Association held a meeting with Nablus Municipality to explore cooperation opportunities in sustainability initiatives and environmental projects aimed at improving urban sustainability and community engagement.

Tree Planting and Campus Greening Initiative

In collaboration with the IEEE Student Branch, the Student Sustainable Development Association organized a volunteer activity to plant flowers and trees across the university campus. The initiative aimed to enhance biodiversity and promote environmental stewardship among students.

Climate Change Awareness Workshop

The association organized an interactive workshop focusing on climate change challenges and solutions, highlighting the importance of youth participation in addressing environmental issues and advancing climate action initiatives.

Student Volunteer Day for Environmental Sustainability

The Student Sustainable Development Association and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter organized a volunteer day aimed at promoting sustainability awareness and community engagement through environmental activities and student participation.

Workshop on Strengthening the Student Role in Achieving the SDGs

An-Najah National University organized a workshop for more than 100 students enrolled in the “Community Service and Sustainable Development” course, in cooperation with the Deanship of Student Affairs, the Community Service Center, and the Sustainability Office, to promote student engagement in sustainability and community action. 

Student Participation in the “Steps Toward Sustainability” Conference & Exhibition

Students from An-Najah National University participated in the “Steps Toward Sustainability” Conference & Exhibition in Ramallah, including students from the Student Association for Sustainable Development, highlighting active student participation in sustainability dialogue and practice beyond campus. 

An-Najah Students at LCOY Palestine 2025

An-Najah students participated in LCOY Palestine 2025 (Local Youth Conference on Climate Change), where they engaged in discussions on waste management, artificial intelligence for climate solutions, food sovereignty, climate justice, water, health, and resilient cities. This is a strong example of student engagement in climate-related sustainability issues at national level. 

Environmental Field Trip to Al-Nassariya

An-Najah students took part in an environmental field trip to Al-Nassariya aimed at promoting experiential learning, environmental awareness, and the university’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, especially quality education, sustainable cities and communities, climate action, and life on land. 

Recreational and Community Support Day at the Employees’ Union Nursery

The Student Association for Sustainable Development organized a recreational day at the university Employees’ Union Nursery as part of its broader community-oriented activities. This item is useful because it shows that the association also addresses the social dimension of sustainability and community wellbeing. 

Student Delegation in the Environmental Public Speaking Competition in Dubai

An-Najah students participated in the Environmental Public Speaking Competition in Dubai, a competition aimed at strengthening youth capacities in environmental sustainability and raising awareness of environmental issues. This is a good example of student leadership, advocacy, and sustainability representation at international level.
