Promoting Water Sustainability

An-Najah National University (ANNU) is a national leader in advancing sustainable water management and fostering conscious water usage across Palestine. Through a combination of education, research, and community engagement, the university provides meaningful opportunities for individuals and communities to learn about responsible water practices, actively supports off-campus water conservation initiatives, and promotes awareness of efficient water use throughout society.

Leveraging its academic faculties, research centers, and specialized units. ANNU integrates practical training, research-based solutions, and public outreach to address water challenges regionally. These efforts are strengthened through strategic collaborations with government agencies, local councils, NGOs, international partners, and other universities, ensuring that sustainable water practices are implemented both on campus and within broader communities.

Educational Opportunities for Local Communities

ANNU is a regional leader in educating students, local communities, and practitioners on sustainable water management, providing practical knowledge on water conservation, efficient irrigation, and responsible water use. The university delivers community-focused programs on water efficiency, safe water handling, wastewater reuse, rainwater harvesting, and smart irrigation through short courses, workshops, school outreach initiatives, public lectures such as World Water Day events, field demonstrations, and farmer field schools. Key contributors include:

Operating since 1994 under the Energy, Water and Food Security Research Center, plays a pivotal role in addressing water challenges in Palestine. The unit promotes conscious water usage through educational workshops, public awareness programs, and collaborations with governmental bodies, the private sector, and local communities. In addition to on-campus activities, the unit extends its water conservation support to off-campus communities by providing research-based recommendations and solutions for better water management practices.

The UNESCO Chair fosters an interdisciplinary approach to water management, promoting conscious water usage through education, training, and community development. By forming partnerships at both national and international levels, the UNESCO Chair supports the advancement of water infrastructure and the improvement of wastewater services. These efforts directly benefit off-campus communities, as the chair focuses on enhancing water conservation practices and ensuring sustainable water usage beyond the university.

The Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine not only educates students but also actively engages with local farmers and agricultural producers to promote sustainable water usage in agriculture. Through workshops, field training, and research projects, the faculty advocates for efficient irrigation systems, soil-water conservation techniques, and methods that reduce water waste. This directly contributes to water conservation efforts off campus, ensuring that best practices are adopted by local agricultural sectors.

Develops innovative water technologies, including efficient irrigation systems, smart water monitoring devices, and wastewater treatment solutions, while training students and local communities in their application.

Designs awareness campaigns and training programs targeting sustainable resource management, including water efficiency practices, environmental stewardship, and responsible usage strategies.

Offers workshops, short courses, and professional training programs for community members, local practitioners, and businesses on sustainable water practices and resource management.

Mobilizes volunteers and community groups to participate in educational water conservation campaigns, hands-on training, and public outreach programs.

Support for Off-Campus Water Conservation

An-Najah National University (ANNU) extends its expertise beyond campus boundaries to actively promote water conservation across local communities, agricultural areas, and municipal projects. By offering research-backed guidance, technical consultations, and hands-on initiatives, the university supports the development and implementation of strategies aimed at reducing water loss and enhancing efficiency.

ANNU’s teams work closely with municipalities, schools, NGOs, farms, utilities, and small industries to deliver practical solutions, including water audits and leak detection programs, fixture retrofits (such as aerators and low-flow devices), irrigation optimization, soil-water conservation practices, rainwater harvesting systems, pilot greywater projects, and small-scale treatment solutions.

Key initiatives include:

  • Agricultural guidance: Advising farmers on advanced irrigation methods, soil-water conservation, and crop-specific water optimization.

  • Municipal consulting: Supporting local councils and municipalities with wastewater reuse, water treatment, and infrastructure improvement projects.

  • Community partnerships: Collaborating with NGOs, government agencies, and community organizations to improve water access and sustainability in rural and underserved regions.

  • Engineering solutions: Designing and implementing technical interventions to boost water efficiency in both urban and agricultural settings.

  • Volunteer engagement: Mobilizing students and community volunteers to contribute to water-saving projects and practical conservation efforts on farms and in neighborhoods.

Promoting Conscious Water Usage in the Wider Community

An-Najah National University (ANNU) actively promotes responsible water use through public awareness campaigns, educational workshops, and community engagement initiatives. By bridging research with practical applications, the university ensures that knowledge reaches households, local businesses, and institutions.

Key contributions include:

  • Awareness campaigns: Promoting water conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable practices across communities.

  • Workshops and outreach programs: Engaging local communities, youth, and civil society organizations in hands-on learning and capacity-building activities.

  • Research-driven interventions: Monitoring water consumption patterns to design targeted strategies that reduce waste and enhance efficiency.

  • Innovative solutions: Developing engineering-based water technologies and smart monitoring systems to raise awareness of modern water management techniques.
