On Sunday March 27, 2022, the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Water Resources Management at An-Najah National University and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) celebrated the World Water Day which is celebrated annually on 22nd March.


The celebration was held in cooperation with the Palestinian Water Authority, the Ministry of Agriculture and An-Najah National University's American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The event was held as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. It also aimed at spreading water conservation awareness among school and university students.

In the opening speech, Dr. Anan Jayyousi, Representative of the Sustainable Water Resources Management at the University, welcomed the attendees and noted that An-Najah University is committed to pursuing the sustainable development goals (SDGs). He also talked about the importance of this celebration as water is a fundamental element of life and sustainable development especially in Palestine. He talked about different water issues and challenges including dependency on Israel, and most importantly Israeli control over water resources in the country. 

He added that the UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Water Resources Management at the University aimed at playing a key role in reaching the 6th goal of the SDGs which is to ensure availability and management of water and sanitation for all. He stated that the UNESCO Chair aimed at offering a set of benefits to the State of Palestine including the promotion of integrated water resources management to ensure resource sustainability in terms of both water quantity and quality, and the development of water infrastructure, and improvement of water services in Palestine. 

In his speech, Eng. Issam Nofal, FAO Project Coordinator, talked about different water projects implemented in Palestine within the agenda of water efficiency, productivity and sustainability in the Middle East and North Africa region.
