The Department of History at An-Najah National University organized a workshop on German Orientalism, ‘Oriental Studies in Germany.’ Olerke Fraytag, the Director of Oriental Studies, explained the relevance of oriental studies to science, the arts and religion.

Mrs. Fraytag talked about the roots and development of oriental studies as part of the romantic movement in modern history, which focuses upon beauty and common values between people. She emphasized the importance of translating oriental literature to German, as this facilitates better understanding of Arab culture, and strengthens ties between Germany and the Arab world. She also talked about the Oriental Studies Center in Berlin, and the opening of the Oriental Studies Center in Beirut.

This activity came about through the efforts of the Department of History at An-Najah National University, which is trying to include many aspects of the world’s literary heritage.
