The university hosted the Palestinian Mathematics Olympiad in collaboration with the National Committee for the Palestinian Mathematics Olympiad. The organization of this event was supported by the Palestinian Organization for Mathematics and the Ministry of Higher Education.
The Olympiad aims to increase interest in math and science, and encourage youngsters to channel their energy in a positive way. It provides them with a first step towards a future in which they can help shape the destiny of their country through knowledge and science.
The exam was opened by the president of the University, Prof. Rami Hamdalla, who welcomed and congratulated the participants. Mr. Suhail Abu Salha, Assistant Dean of the Education Faculty and a member of the Olympiad Committee, noted that participation in the Olympiad was high, with 250 students taking part in Nablus alone, and another 2400 in Gaza and the rest of the West Bank.
The top four students in the Olympiad will be able to participate in a trial project, aimed at preparing them for the International Mathematics Olympiad which will be held in 2007 in the United States of America. These lucky four will take part in a one-week science camp in the United States, where they will receive training by top Palestinian scientists in the fields of physics, math and technology.
