An-Najah's youth exchange program, Zajel, today launched its August 'work camp' in the Al-Askr refugee camp.
Around twenty international volunteers have arrived in Nablus, defying Israel's attempted closure of the city, in order to give those with a heart for Palestine the opportunity to work with Palestinians to support the most disadvantage in the troubled nation.
Children in the camp, including those with disabilities, will benefit from workshops and sessions run by volunteers, aimed at relieving the claustrophobia of life in the camp. Arts, crafts, music and drama are amongst the scheduled activities.
One volunteer told Zajel.org, "This is a fantastic opportunity to learn a great deal and to contribute something to the people of Palestine." He continued, "I'm sure it will be a challenge, but its one that can only benefit all concerned."
The secondary purpose of the camp is to promote cultural understanding between internationals and locals, with an emphasis on introducing the visitors to the culture and heritage of Palestine that is usually overlooked by the political focus of news from the region.
The camp will last for three weeks.
