A workshop on American Literature in the 19th century was organized between the Department of English at An-Najah National University and the American Studies Department at George Washington University. The meeting was held in cooperation between the Public Affairs Office at the American Consulate in Jerusalem and the Public Relations Department at An-Najah.
Mr.Rafi Daraghmeh, Assistant Director of Public Relations Department, welcomed Prof.Theresa Murphy,from the American Studies Department at George Washington University and who teaches American Literature and history. At the beginning of the meeting, Prof. Murphy made a presentation on the 19th century American literature and the different trends that influenced it.
Instructors from the English Department specialized in the field of American Literature, as well as students from the Department, participated in the dialogue and the discussion, which focused on different issues such as Democracy, Women, Civil War, Freedom and Slavery as manifested in this literature. The participants asked Prof. Murphy several questions on the educational system, text books used in teaching American Literature, and the impact of slavery on American writers.
