On Tuesday, October 18th, 2016, the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Teacher Training in cooperation with the American Corner Nablus of the International Office at An-Najah organized a workshop for school teachers at the library’s conference room in the Old Campus.


The focus of the workshop is to provide hands-on activities and strategies to enhance literacy instruction in schools.  In particular, participants, who are teachers of English in the school districts of the Nablus Governorate, were presented with interactive pedagogical techniques to promote language and academic development in English classrooms.

The workshop was conducted by U.S. Fulbright Scholar Professor Mahmoud Suleiman of California State University, Bakersfield.  The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Programme is sponsored by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), Institute of International Education (IIE), Washington, DC. and operated under the auspicious of the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem.

The workshop aimed at strengthening academic relations between An-Najah and the Palestinian Ministry of Higher Education and transferring international experiences to enrich higher education and improve teacher training in different academic fields.

Prof. Suleiman engaged participants in learning about and modeling interactive approaches and workable pedagogical strategies that can promote Palestinian students’ literacy and academic skills.  Participants were also engaged in a number of literacy activities to hone their professional skills and enrich their instructional choices. 

This event was sponsored by the Teacher Education Programmes and the American Corner at An-Najah and in coordination with the Palestinian Ministry of Education.

  • The workshop was also attended by Dr. Alia Assali, Dean of the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Teacher Training; Dr. Mahmoud Ramadan and Dr. Kefah Barham, Assistant Professors at the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Teacher Training; Ms Alia Gilbrecht, Coordinator of the American Corner Nablus and Ms Shatha Jararaa, Translator and Administrative Assistant at the Public Relations Department at An-Najah.
  • Prof. Suleiman obtained his BA in English Language and Literature from An-Najah National University in 1985. In 1987 and 1993, he got his MA in TESL and PhD in elementary education from Arizona State University respectively. He is specialized in various areas such as teacher education, second language acquisition, multiculturalism and cultural literacy development, instructional leadership, educational research and distance learning including ITV, online and hybrid, internet and multimedia instruction.
