Facilities
Nutrition & Food Technology Lab
This laboratory contains the devices that are characterized by high technical capacity to meet the requirements of Nutrition Department. In this laboratory, experiments and practical exercises are conducted on the application of all procedures and tests necessary for food, in terms of safety and components and methods of manufacturing --- etc, such as food processing and storage, meat processing technology, chemistry of food analysis, meals planning, milk analyzing , food microbiology - etc. Furthermore, in this laboratory, activities by students are performed in order to prepare some meals with nutritional benefit to the body , and to calculate the amount of calories in it, then distribute it free of charge to students.
Among the devices, available in this laboratory are the following:
- Milk analyser, Milkoscope, Automatic, Julie C8.
- TANITA High Capacity Body Composition Analyser.
- UV-Sepctrophotometer, UV/Visible Range, 4nm SBW.
- Hand Grip Dynamometer .
- Moisture Analyzer.
- Gerber Centrifuge.
Feed Analysis & Milk Hygiene Lab
Experiments & practical training for students are conducted in this laboratory on the methods used to estimate the proportion (%) of protein, fat , fiber and calories in samples of feed and food, and that is done by using devices with high-tech and sophisticated , as well as performing the experiments and the process that is used to estimate (test) the milk hygiene from the physical , chemical and microbiological aspects. In addition, it can be used for performing experiments and practical exercises concerning tests of soil and irrigation, due to the readiness of the laboratory of tools, equipment and materials.
Among the devices, available in this laboratory are the following:
- Flame Photometer 410,sherwood.
- Ankom 200 fiber analyser A200>
- Ankom Extractor, XT 10 I.
- Kjeldahl distillation & Digestion system.
- Calorimeter C 200.
- Conductivity Meter.
- Daisy II Incubator, Ankom technology.
- Lactometers & Hydrometers.
Microbiology Lab
In this lab; different experiments and practical training are conducted to teach students how to prepare the medias which are used for the growth of microorganisms , as well as how to perform staining for microorganisms , then the use of optical microscopes for diagnoses then treatment. Students are also trained on how to conduct sensitivity tests for the bacteria that was detected from the samples which have been received from the internal field (the farm) as well as from samples of the external field (abroad).
Among the devices, available in this laboratory are the following:
- Incubator.
- Autoclave.
- Light Microscopes.
- Laminar Flow.
- Stomacher.
Industry
The department has a tight connection of local community for example in case of the food industry our students spend one term equivalent to 140 working hour, working and getting proper training in the Palestinian food factories. such a training is based on our visio to equip the students with appropriate skills and to meet the demand of professional food technologists. Here, all students will participate in the production process and solving any problem may face the process.
On the other hand, Students also get training in Local hospitals either public or private to get in touch with the health care environment and be familiar with routine in this sector. Students who prefer this type of carrier will further be subject to Nutritionist Society exam to be qualified as full nutritionist. Moreover, the department has lots of visits to local schools, food factories and hospital to keep students linked with the profession and provide the local community with seminars, workshops and awareness days about nutrition and health. Recently, we connected with Autism society in Tulkarm and diagnosed 15 cases. Work still ongoing and mutual activities are planned.
The Most important memorandum signed by the department and local industry:
- Padico.
- Al-Safa Dairy Plant.
Teaching and Learning
The program based on face to face teaching with attendance is compulsory for all topics. All topics are covered by lectures and notes. Some topics are using moodle (e learning which is a platform of delivering notes, relevant websites, video clips etc.) as most of the courses are supplemented with practical these courses are benefited from the lab facilities available
Coursework and Assessment
All coursework are assessed 3 times per theoretical courses with 2 more assessment exams for practicals.
In addition to discussion home work and projects that will participate in the total mark for a student.
For e learning topics the level of discussion on moodle and proposed forums will play a major part in the assessment process.
