Venezuelan Ambassador Discusses the Future Cooperation with the University
The Ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela H.E. Dr. Rafael Leal, accompanied by a group of diplomats from the Venezuelan embassy, visited An-Najah National University and met with Prof. Maher Natsheh, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Saed Abu-Hijleh, Director of the Public Relations Department.
At the beginning of the meeting, Prof. Natsheh gave a synopsis about latest achievements and developments of the university and the new facilities and projects launched as well as the opening of the new campus. He also saluted the Venezuelan people for their supportive stance to the Palestinian and Iraqi peoples.
Dr. Leal spoke about education in his country. He said that education was previously accessible only to the social elite, but now, thanks to recent reforms it is open to all regardless of social or economical status. He also explained his government's projects in the fields of development and rehabilitation. He mentioned the cooperation his country has with other Latin American states in scientific and academic fields, especially those with Cuba.
He expressed his country's belief in peace and justice for all nations, mentioning the important role universities play in creating young leadership that is capable of developing and improving society. He mentioned his country failed four times in forming a good republican regime, but now they have hopes in the fifth republic under the leadership of President Chavez. He explained how his people have struggled to get back the control on their national wealth which has been controlled by foreign capitalist interests.
In regards to the future cooperation between An-Najah and Venezuelan universities, Dr. Leal expressed his willingness to work with An-Najah in order create opportunities for cultural and academic exchange, and to initiate a programme for teaching Spanish in the university in cooperation with Simon Bolivar Foundation.
