Prof. Rami Hamdallah, the University President, met with Mrs. Asma Jahangir, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief.

Prof. Hamdallah welcomed Mrs. Jahangir and emphasized the significance of joint cooperation between the university and UN human rights institutions. The role of UN institutions in establishing the principles of freedom, democracy and mutual respect among different religions was discussed. The University President explained that the situation in the city of Nablus, where Muslims, Christians and Samaritans live side by side, is a good example of mutual respect among religions.

On her part, the UN Rapporteur said that Palestinian universities, especially An-Najah N. University, are active agents in the community development process. Also, she stressed the importance of supporting the principles of humanity and mutual respect among religions. At the end of the meeting, Mrs. Jahangir expressed her sincere wishes to the Palestinian people hoping that they will be able to establish a viable Palestinian state and to live peacefully in their country.
