On Wednesday, March 16, the UNESCO Chair for Human Rights and Democracy in coordination with the An Najah Media Center hosted the screening of the film “Have you Heard from Johannesburg?” followed by a discussion with the film’s director, Connie Field.   The documentary, which is over eight hours in length, chronicles the decades-long struggle of the people of South Africa to end the Apartheid regime which designated the indigenous blacks of South Africa as non-citizens of the state and instituted a social, economic and political system designed to perpetuate this oppression.

The chapter shown on Wednesday, entitled “The Bottom Line,” highlights the essential role that international solidarity played in ending the South African Apartheid regime, especially when political and diplomatic efforts were unsuccessful.  After the screening the students had the chance to discuss with the Oscar-nominated director questions about her personal motivation for doing this film, the technical aspects of producing and directing a documentary, and engage in a conversation about what lessons from the South African experience of international solidarity can be applied to the current situation in Palestine.
