A delegation from the British University of Lancaster visited An Najah University on Monday, 8th of February 2010. The delegation included Lancaster University president, Prof. Robert McKinlay, Prof. Emma Rose, Associate Dean Postgraduate Studies at Lancaster, and Prof. Victoria Mason, instructor at the University. The guests were received by An Najah University President, Prof. Rami Hamdallah, Prof. Maher Abu Eid Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Shaker Bitar, Vice President for Administrative Affairs, President Assistant for International and strategic Affairs, as well as Mr. Ala Abu Dheer, Acting Director of the Public Relations Department at the University. Attended the meeting was also Mr. Muhammad Al-Kobari, Director of the British Council in Nablus.
Prof. Hamdallah met with the delegation members in his office where he introduced a summary of An Najah, its academic programs and the role it plays in developing and supporting the educational process in Palestine. A documentary film that embodies the University's progress and long march in the different academic fields was also presented. Prof. Hamdallah further stressed the importance of maintaining contact between the two universities and to send Palestinian students to pursue their higher education in Britain. He also hoped to develop mechanisms that would facilitate the enrollment of students in British universities and emphasized the significance of cooperation in the field of scientific research and joint projects.
President Assistant for Strategic and International Affairs also presented a description of the International Youth Exchange Program, Zajel, and how it facilitates contact between Palestinian and British students. Furthermore, she pointed out to the importance of cooperation between An Najah and European universities which is represented by the recently inaugurated Regional Office of the UNIMED at An Najah. Prof. MacKinlay, meanwhile, spoke about Lancaster's strategic plan which focuses on academic efforts, university-society relationship, quality of education, and scientific research. He also said that Lancaster is willing to cooperate with An Najah University.
While Prof. Rose stressed the importance of cooperation in the fields of literary studies, art, and human sciences. During the visit, a joint cooperation agreement was singed between An Najah and Lancaster on the exchange of academic programs, students, and researchers. A tour in the New Campus was organized and the guests were introduced to the various facilities that are available there. Another tour was organized to the old city of Nablus and other parts of the city where they expressed their admiration by the city's historical landmarks and locations.
