The University Organizes a Video Conference with Professor Farouk El-Baz

On April 7th 2010, the Public Relations Department and the Student Committee for Space and Astronomical Sciences at the University organized a video conference with the Research Professor Farouk El-Baz who is currently the Director of the Center for Remote Sensing at Boston University in the United States.


In the conference, Prof. El-Baz spoke about his personal experience in life, his work at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), his contribution and work in the Apollo Program as a supervisor of Lunar Science Planning from 1967 to 1972, and the scientific astronomical observations he made. He also explained the many studies he conducted on Arabian deserts and his work in the field of Information Technology. He further spoke about the research that he has achieved in the field of geology. The conference also included other topics such as: the Dead Sea Project, the different periods in Earth's history and the geological fault in the Great Rift Valley.
A discussion was raised between the Professor and the attendants about several topics including: earthquakes, the geological fault of the Great Rift Valley, the dangers of this area, theories about the creation of the Moon, and the possibility of using astronomical programs in the Arab world.


Professor El Baz said he admired the University's students, especially those of the Faculty of Engineering who are continuously interested in astronomy and encouraged others to seek knowledge and increase their experience in every field in which they are interested the most. Dr. Ansam Sawalha, Director of the Poison Control and Drug Information Center at the University and an organizing member of the conference, emphasized that Arab scientists should take advantage of the Professor El Baz's experience, skills and the knowledge he possesses. She also stressed the importance of knowledge as a way to develop both the individual and the society.


Mr. Ala Abu Dheer, Acting Director of the Public Relations Department at the University, said that organizing such a conference provides students with an opportunity to know more about astronomy and become more aware of the many aspects of this science.
