The University Concludes a Training Course on Earthquake-Proof Constructions
18 February 2010
In its quest to serve the Palestinian society, and on the basis of the cooperation between the Engineering Association and the Earth Sciences and Seismic Engineering Center (ESSEC) at the University, An-Najah graduated a course on seismic design of constructions on February 17th 2010.
Participated in the course were graduates and fifth-year students from the departments of Civil and Construction Engineering at An-Najah Faculty of Engineering. Attended the ceremony was Dr. Nabil Dmaidi, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Jalal Dabeek, Coordinator of the Scientific Centers and Director of the (ESSEC), Dr. Musaddaq Al-Masri, Director of the Continuing Education Center at the University, as well as Engineer Ahmed Adili, Chief of Engineers in Al-Quds Center.
Dr. Dmaidi said that it is important to continue holding such specialized courses since they are very important for the students who will become the engineers of the future. Dr. Dabeek stressed the importance of continuing to hold supplementary and practical activities which complement theoretical engineering education. Chief of Engineers said that it is important for the students of Engineering to join the Engineering Association after they graduate to benefit from the programs it provides. He also mentioned that Association is currently concerned with providing job opportunities for newly graduated engineers.
The course covered a number of topics such as: an introduction to seismology, the seismic nature of the area, the impact of the location's soil on the seismic behavior of the constructions, the architectural and constructional design of earthquake proof buildings, measuring seismic forces, evaluating damages aftermath, and others. It is important to mention here that the (ESSEC), which was established in 1996, is a key reference in Palestine regarding issues of earth sciences, earthquake-proof constructions and disaster management.
