The University Celebrates the 30th Graduation Commencement Ceremony at Prince Turki Bin Abdul Aziz Theater

On Sunday, June 6th 2010, the University celebrated the 30th graduation commencement in a ceremony that was held at Prince Turki Bin Abdul Aziz Theater at the New Campus. The celebration was organized under the auspices of His Excellency President Mahmoud Abbas. Among the attendants were His Excellency Prime Minister Dr. Salam Fayyad, Mr. Sabih Al-Masri, Chair of the Board of Trustees, members of the Board, the University President, Prof. Rami Hamdallah, Ms Lamis Alami, Minister of Education and Higher Education, as well as a number of national figures, representatives of official and public institutions and others.

Mr. Al-Masri delivered a speech in which he congratulated the students on their graduation and said that graduating from university is the beginning of another life full of hard work. A life that requires a lot of effort to achieve the desired goals, a job-seeking life has just started and the students should not stop seeking knowledge as well. He encouraged the graduates to work all the time and not to surrender and added that failure is not the end; it is the beginning of an imminent success.

In the ceremony, Ms. Alami spoke to the graduates and expressed her happiness for their success. She mentioned that the Palestinian universities and colleges reflect the degree of development that Palestine has achieved in the field of education over the last years. She also spoke about higher education in Palestine and how it has developed despite the challenging situations on ground. She described the reality of education in the country as promising which is clear through the achievements that the University has made and the increasing number of students who join higher education every year.

Prof. Hamdallah on his part welcomed the guests and congratulated the students describing them as the future of the present and the builders of the coming state. He also thanked the Palestinian leadership represented by President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Dr. Salam Fayyad for their continuous support of the educational process in Palestine. He further spoke about the different developments that the University has achieved with respect to academic programs, services, the building of new facilities, and the various kinds of scholarships that are offered to the students.
Regarding scientific research, the President said that the University puts all its resources into supporting this field since it is a major constituent in any development strategy. Prof. Hamdallah also valued the role that the University's employees play which led it to take a pride-of-place position among other universities according to the World Universities' Ranking on the Web (Webometrics) which ranked it first in Palestine and tenth in the Arab world.
In addition to this, Prof. Hamdallah mentioned that the University has finished a number of vital projects such as the new library, the Media Center, the new underground central stores as well as the new National Teaching Hospital at the New Campus. He explained that the new library will include a large number of books in different languages, while the Media Center will include different facilities that were specially designed for audio and video recording, as well as broadcasting and training. The Teaching Hospital will receive patients and provide the best medical care with the least costs.

Dr. Fayyad in his speech congratulated the students and spoke about the University's long, successful history and the various phases of development it has witnessed. He also described the different academic programs that are being introduced and the new facilities that are being built, particularly the new National Teaching Hospital. Moreover, he spoke about the many aspects of development that the city of Nablus has witnessed in different fields such as economy, tourism, education, services and others.

He further assured that the National Authority, represented by President Mahmoud Abbas, will continue to support education in Palestine in all fields, particularly in academia.

After that, the University's first student, Sarah Sarghalli from the Department of Accounting at the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, delivered her speech in which she described her study and the long years of hard work she experienced. She also thanked the University represented by its staff and administration for their support and guidance, and her family for their care and encouragement.


At the conclusion of the ceremony, Prime Minister Dr. Salam Fayyad, Prof. Hamdallah and Mr. Al-Masri inaugurated the new library and the Media Center building which consist of seven floors. The first six floors are occupied by the library while the remaining floor is designed to host the Media Center. His Excellency also inaugurated the new central underground stores designed to store equipments and devices that belong to the faculties of Nursing and Science.
