The University Announces the Winner of An-Najah Research Award in Natural Sciences 2010
30 May 2010
On May 30th 2010, the University announced the winner of the An-Najah Research Award 2010 for Natural Sciences in a celebration that was organized in Amman, Jordan. Among the attendants was Prof. Ghassan Saffarini, Dean of the Scientific Research at the University, Professor Faisal Abdalla, Assistant Secretary General for the Association of Arab Universities, as well as a number of researchers, scholars and professors from the University of Jordan and the Applied Science Private University in Jordan.
The An-Najah Research Award aims to encourage scientists and researchers in the Arab world to carry out creative and innovative studies. It also gives them a chance to employ modern technology in achieving applied and useful research that will benefit the Arab world in general and Palestine in particular. This Award reflects the University's deep concern in supporting scientific research and is granted to those who conduct researches that are considered scientifically significant and valuable.
The University announced that the winner of the An-Najah Research Award in Natural Sciences this year is Dr. Khalid Muhammad Hosni Muhammad, the Researcher and Professor at the Information Technology Department, Faculty of Computers and Informatics at Zagazig University in Egypt. Dr. Muhammad, who is now a Professor at the Department of Computer Science at Najran University in Saudi Arabia, has been granted the Award for his research "Exact Legendre Moment Computation for Grey Level Images".

Dr. Muhammad's research discusses the exact legendre computation using a recurrence formula to compute exact values of moments by mathematically integrating the legendre polynomials over digital image pixels. This technique removes the numerical approximation errors that are included in conventional methods. According to the Professor, a fast algorithm is proposed to accelerate the moment's computations. This method is thus distinguished from conventional methods by its speed and accuracy.
Mr. Tala Abdul Raheem, Head of An-Najah National University's Liaison Office in Amman, thanked the Jordanian universities for their support and cooperation with An-Najah in the field of scientific research and the development of the two countries. He also called upon the participants to have more cooperation and coordination in the future in the different fields of life.

Prof. Saffarini spoke about the Award and said that it covers two fields: Natural and human sciences in which a number of Arab researchers compete and participate with novel research and scientific studies.
Dr. Muhammad, on his part, spoke about his research in the Journal, Pattern Recognition, and called upon Arab professors and scholars to encourage scientific research among their students since it is a key factor that determines the degree of development that a certain country has.
