The Third International Medical Conference Concludes and Presents a Number of Recommendations

October 21st 2010. The Third International Medical Conference, which was organized at the University between the 20th and 21st of October 2010, was concluded with a number of recommendations and suggestions. After the many discussions that took place and the various work papers that were presented over two days, the participants recommended carrying out investigations and research work on adolescents' health in order to better understand their needs and solve their problems. They also called for more involvement of representatives from the youth sector in the conference's high committee and to take part in the development of new agenda in the future.
The participants also emphasized the importance of adopting mental health and a healthy lifestyle as basis for the Palestinian model that is related to adolescents' health in Palestine. The also said that participating in such events encouraged many researchers to publish their research in the University's Medical Journal.
Participants in the conference mentioned that the level of medical services in Palestine is very limited; therefore, the establishment of new centers that deal with the physical, mental, social and emotional issues related to adolescents' health must be looked at as being a national priority. There is also a growing need to provide youth and their families with more information regarding their needs and problems during this transitional stage in their life.
The conference discussed issues including youth health, how to improve the social and medical status of adolescents in Palestine, focus on addressing issues related to prevalent diseases, acne, hormonal disorders, tumors, genetically-transferred diseases, addiction, depression, early marriage, and sexual behavior.
The participants in the conference presented a number of work papers including "Youth-Friendly Clinics in the Private Sector" by Dr. Samar Musmar, from the Faculty of Medicine at the University, "Pre-Marriage Thalassemia Tests" by Dr. Riyad Amer, and "The Spread of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Chlamydia Trachomatis" by Dr. Waleed Al-Basha.
Dr. Dudin presented a paper in which he spoke about adolescents while Dr. Muhammad Abu Sharifeh, an Ophthalmologist, presented a paper about improving eye sight in the first 20 years of a human life. Dr. Idris Jaradat from the Ministry of education and Higher Education spoke about visual difficulties in governmental schools in Palestine.
Dr. Jawad Fatayer, the University's President Assistant for Graduate Affairs, presented a paper on the type of addiction and the vulnerability of youth in Palestine. Dr. Halima Al-Sabbah presented a paper in which she discussed food habits and body activity in the Palestinian youth pattern. Dr. Ayman Hussein, from the Faculty of Medicine at the University, spoke about the spread of vitamin B12 among school children in Northern West Bank in addition to other papers.
Dr. Rami Al-Zagha thanked the University's administration represented by President, Prof. Rami Hamdallah, for the support it provided to make this event a success. He added that the importance of such conference lies in the fact that it contributes to the improvement of health among adolescents and youth in Palestine that would guarantee a happy life for them.
