The graduation ceremony of the training course on Islamic law for lawyers
The graduation ceremony of the training course on "Islamic law for lawyers" was held at the University on 6 March 2008. Prof. Rami Hamadallah, the University's President, and Shiekh Taiseer Tamimi, Head of the Islamic Supreme Council of the Jurisprudence in Palestine, attended the ceremony.
In his speech, Prof. Hamdallah congratulated the 30 trainees who have acquired basic skills and thanked the trainers for successfully completing the training course by overcoming all sorts of difficulties. "The training itself was not the purpose," Prof. Hamdallah said. "The ultimate objective of the training course has been to empower lawyers. With this knowledge, the lawyers will be able to articulate and defend Muslim women’s and men's rights within their own religious, cultural and institutional contexts," he added.
The training course examined the outlines of Islamic family law in gender issues, family structure, family planning, marriage and divorce, parenthood, child guardianship and custody, etc. The course started with a general survey of Islamic legal system and the attempts of Muslim jurists to come to terms with the challenges of modern times. The graduates are lawyers, whose services are in great demand in Palestine. The training is rare for lawyers in West Bank, and representatives of the graduates noted with appreciation the quality and relevance of the training courses to their legal practices.
