June 2nd. After two days of presentations and scientific sessions, the Fifth Palestinian International Chemistry Conference was successfully concluded today in which many experts, scholars and scientists from different parts of the world participated.

The participants came up with a number of recommendations including: Considering scientific research as a priority in order to support the Palestinian national economy and reach a scientific research platform in the country, reinforcing research cooperation efforts among the different universities with respect to the various fields of chemistry, strengthening academic cooperation between the different chemistry departments at the Palestinian, Arab and international universities, and finally forming a research network between researchers and academics at the Palestinian universities and national industries.

The second day of the Conference included several work papers that were presented on a number of issues in chemistry, among those was: “Metal-Organic Frameworks and their Applications to Clean Energy” by Professor Omar Yaghi, “Predicting the Solubility of Pesticide Compounds in Water Using QSPR Methods” by Omar Deeb, “Fate of Oxytetracycline & Doxycycline in Soil & Underground Water” by Lama Sameeh Awartani, “Surface Energies of Metals in Both Liquid and Solid States” by Fathi Aqra, and “The Association Behavior of Small Organic Compounds in Aqueous Medium Using Light Scattering Techniques: The Benzotriazoles as an Example” by Fadwa Ode.

Also, “Direct Asymmetric Catalytic Oxidation of Ketones to α-Hydroxy Ketones Using a Chiral Bimetallic Pd(II) Complex” by Othman Hamed, “Synthesis, spectral study and Antibacterial activity of Chloroarsenic(III)3(2’-hydroxyphenyl)-5-(4-substituted “ by Dr. Jeeven Singh, “Renewable Energy as Only-Choice for Mankind:  “ by Dr. Hikmat Hilal, “Tribological Performance of MoS2:Ti /MoS2: TiBN/TiBN/TiB2/ TiComposites” by Dr. Shehdeh Jodeh, “Hydrogen Storage in Nano-Sized Metallic and Bimetallic Clusters” by Mohammed Suleiman, “Understanding Complexation and Desorption of Copper Ion in Three contaminated Soil Types in Palestine Using Surfactants and Ligands” by Ahmad A. Abu-Obaid , and “Monosaccharide and Glycan Analysis by Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry” by Loubna Hammad.

The final session included: “X-ray Crystallographic – Interdisciplinary Research” by Professor Shashidhara Prasad, “Nitrate and nitrite ion removal from water using activated carbon based on solid olive wastes” by Hiba Nassar, “An optical characterization of Tris (2-aminoethyl) aminocarboxylic acid Functionalized Polyvinylbenzyl Chloride Microspheres using polymer swelling” by Hanin R. Qasim, “The Kinetic Study Of Glyphosate Leachate in Palestinian soil at Different Concentrations” by Manar Attallah, “New Technique to Prepare Nano-Sized CdS Films for Light-to-Electricity Conversion” by Sahar Khudruj, “Sensitizing Zinc Oxide Photocatalyst with Natural dye for Water Disinfection under Sun Light” by Sondos Ateeq, “Sensitization of semiconducting powder catalysts in water purification: Photo-degradation of medical drugs and microorganisms” by Fedaa Salih, and “Preparation and Enhancement of CdS/ZnS Thin Films for Photovoltaic Purposes” by Maysaa Atatreh.

Dr. Khaled Canaan spoke about the situation of the Palestinian Chemical Society while the participants called for granting memberships to chemists to join this Society. The participants also called for holding the meeting of the Society’s General Authority on October so as to discuss the administrative and financial report and elect a new administrative body for the Society.

At the end of the conference, Dr. Khalil thanked all the participants and researchers for their valuable participation in the conference and said the Conference was a complete success and hoped that its important recommendations would be taken into consideration. He also thanked the University and the local institutions for their support of the Conference.
