On Thursday, April 29th 2010, the Department of Journalism and Mass Media at An-Najah University held a workshop in which four Palestinian universities participated. Dr. Abdel Jawwad Abdel Jawwad, Head of the Journalism Department at An-Najah, as well as Dr. Farid Abu Dhair, Dr. Samar Shunnar, and Dr. Ayman Al-Masri the instructors at the Department of Journalism at An-Najah participated in the workshop. The other three universities were Al-Quds University represented by Dr. Abdel Karim Sarhan, Birzeit University represented by Dr. Nebal Thawabteh, Director of the Media Development Center, Dr. Amani Abu Hantash and Dr. Riyad Deis and finally the Arab American University represented by Dr. Awadallah. The workshop was attended by a number of students and aimed at discussing cooperation prospects between the departments of Journalism at different Palestinian universities.
Dr. Abdel Jawwad said that the meeting aimed to create an atmosphere for the exchange of experiences and ideas in the field of Journalism and reinforce cooperation between the different Palestinian universities in this field. Dr. Abu Dhair also stressed the importance of the internet and that the student of Journalism must be trained on how to seek information and maintain contact with the different media organizations.
Dr. Thawabteh spoke about the importance of training students of Journalism on how to make use of modern technology, especially the internet, in the different fields of media. Students of Journalism should also be provided with necessary equipments, devices, qualified teachers and a solid infrastructure that would enable them to be up-to-date with the latest developments in this field. Dr. Deis, Coordinator of the TV Unit at Birzeit, said that Journalism is a vital tool through which the Palestinian cause is promoted among other countries, and since using the internet has made many people in the world aware of this issue. It is of substantial importance to train students on modern technology so that they make use of it in supporting the Palestinian case.
At the end of the meeting, a number of recommendations were made including the execution of specific steps to develop media performance in the different Journalism departments in Palestine and to unify media courses and programs among those departments.
