On April 10th, in honor of the International Day of Reflection on the Genocide in Rwanda the UNESCO Chair on Human Rights and Democracy at An-Najah University organized the screening of the “Shooting Dogs” film at the Conference Room, Old Campus library. The film depicted the events that took place almost 17 years ago to the day when the genocide in Rwanda began. In 100 days close to 1 million people lost their lives, most for no other reason than belonging to a particular ethnic group.
“Beyond the Gates” is based on the true story of two teachers who take on the nearly impossible task of saving the lives of their students and members of the community from the bloodshed sweeping the country while UN forces pull out and world leaders remain silent.
The film provides a glimpse into the months of genocide, and offers a devastating indictment of the silence of the international community in the face of these horrors and the failure of the UN to live up to its promises of protection.
