Prof. Rami Hamdallah, President of the University, was appointed as a member of Yasser Arafat Foundation's board of  trustees alongside Mr. Suar Al Dahab, the former Sudanese president; Dr. Salam Fayad, the Palestinian Prime Minister; Mr. Sadiq Al-Mahdi, the former Prime Minister of Sudan; Dr. Abdel Salam Majali, the former Prime Minister of Jordan; Mr. Ahmad Qurei,the former Prime Minister of Palestine; Mr. Alhadi Bakosh, former Prime Minister of Tunisia; Dr. Nabil Sha'ath, the Palestinian president's representative in Cairo; Dr. Ahmad Tibi, a former advisor to President Arafat; the Palestinian poet Mr. Mahmoud Darwish; Dr. Nabil Qasis, President of Bir Zeit University; Mr. Muneeb Masri; Mr. Akram Haneih; and Dr. Mustafa Uthman Ismail, an advisor to the Sudanese president, as well as other leading intellectuals and academics.
President Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) has been chosen as an honorary president of the Foundation and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Dr. Amro Mousa, has been elected to head of the Foundation.
Prof. Hamdallah attended the ceremony held in on Tuesday in Cairo which marked the inauguration of the Foundation in order to commemorate and preserve the great legacy of the Late President Yasser Arafat.  President Hamdallah characterized the late President Yasser Arafat, who was awarded the Noble Peace Prize in 1994, as "a great national and global symbol to all supporters and advocates of peace and justice in the world.""The purpose of the Foundation is to honor the memory of the President Yasser Arafat among Palestinians and the whole world.  It is important to initiate humanistic and academic activities in order to increase support among women and children, to encourage excellence and to strengthen the unity and national connection between all Palestinians," a statement describing the Foundation's goals read.The newly-established Foundation will establish a photo and audio archive and museum in the city of Ramallah.  In addition to charity work the Foundation will also encourage people who are highly skilled and qualified in their professions of the different domains by offering awards and scholarships.
