Postgraduate Student awarded PhD in Chemistry
Ibrahim Abu-Shqair has become the second postgraduate student in a year to be awarded a PhD in Chemistry, for a thesis entitled Determination of Some Fluoroquinolone Antibacterial with DNA-Modified Electrodes and Their Oxidation by Potassium Hexacyanoferrate. Dr Abu-Shqair was supervised by Professor Radi Daoud and Professor Mohammad Al-Subu.
Dr Abu-Shqair’s thesis is based on the idea of the UV-visible spectroscope. Electrochemical methods were used to study the interaction of some fluoroquinolones with calf-thymus DNA. A method was proposed for the determination of ciprofloxacin concentration both in tablets and in a biological fluid (urine). The method was found to be sensitive, accurate and inexpensive.
