In cooperation with the Calibration Unit at An-Najah University, the Palestine Standards Institution (PSI) organized a two-day training course at the University. The first day of the course was dedicated to the calibration of volumes’ measurements, while the second day will address the issue of the calibration of pressure and tensile forces measurement. The course was administered by Engineer Usama Milhem, External Relations Consultant at the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology and the expert in Metrology in the PTB (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt).

Attendees to the opening of the course included Prof. Rami Hamdallah, President of An-Najah University, Engineer Mazen Abu Shari’a, Director-General of the PSI, Engineer Ahmed Jallad, Director of the Laboratories Adoption at the PSI, Engineer Ra’fat Kittaneh, Director of the Calibration Unit at the University, and Dr. Jalal Dabbeek, Coordinator of the Scientific Centers at An-Najah.

At the opening of the course Prof. Hamdallah delivered a speech in which he welcome Engineer Milhem to the University and valued his interest to lecture at An-Najah and meet with its staff. He also said that based on the University’s concern with serving the Palestinian society and its institutions and in recognition of the importance of cooperation and coordination between the University and local institutions as well as the rapid development in the field of measurement and industry, the local institutions and companies have begun to adopt international quality systems that go with the nature of work being performed at these institutions and companies.

Moreover, he explained that the University has signed an agreement with the PSI by which both sides exchange expertise and training in order to instill the values of collaborative work between the different institutions. The two courses were held to meet the needs of the local market such as the calibration of devices and equipment used in the production process or in the measurement of its performance.

Engineer Abu Shari’a spoke about the importance of the partnership between the PSI and An-Najah and thanked the PTB and the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology for their support.

Engineer Milhem spoke about the importance of the course which stems out of two significant aspects in the public economical life these are the volumes and the pressure and tensile forces. He also explained that economy is based on volume measurement which is needed by the medical and health departments in the country.

Furthermore, Engineer Jallad said that the course’s importance was recognized after measuring the Palestinian market’s need for it especially the laboratories working in the field of chemical and bacteria tests, medical laboratories and calibration. Knowledge gained through this course can be utilized to help the different institutions working in the field of standardization in Palestine.

Engineer Kittaneh thanked the PSI for its cooperation with the University to offer the best services and develop the Palestinian society and its various sectors based on the international requirements of quality systems and sustainable development.

Dr. Dabbeek said that the University will always work in providing the Palestinian society with the different services it needs in accordance with the University’s philosophy.
