On March 22nd, the Faculty of Arts at An-Najah organized a seminar titled “The Strategy of the Ministry of Labor in Reducing Unemployment among Palestinian University Graduates” in which Dr. Ahmed Majdalani, the Palestinian Minister of Labor lectured.

Prior to the seminar, Dr. Majdalani met with the University President, Prof. Rami Hamdallah, at his office at the Old Campus where the President valued the Ministry’s efforts to reduce unemployment among Palestinian graduates and hoped that cooperation between the University and the Ministry would continue so as to benefit the graduates and ensure them a brighter future.

On his part, Dr. Majdalani thanked Prof. Hamdallah for his interest in holding such seminars and emphasized the Ministry’s deep concern with reducing unemployment and solving the various problems that Palestinian graduates face.  In the meeting also, Dr. Majdalani discussed with the President the Ministry’s strategy to reduce unemployment among Palestinian graduates.

After the meeting, the Department of Sociology and Social Service at the University the seminar at the Martyr Zafer Al-Masri Auditorium. Dr. As’ad Taffal from the Sociology and Social Service Department, as well as Dr. Maher Abu Zant, Dean of the Faculty of Arts attended the meeting.

In the seminar, Dr. Majdalani spoke about the most common problem that Palestinian graduates face which is unemployment which dominates the work market. He said that the more than 40,000 students graduates every year from the Palestinian universities and that only 18% of them succeed in finding a suitable job while the rest are left unemployed.

Dr. Majdalani also spoke about the huge number of Palestinian youth that apply for migration to foreign and Arab countries in search of work; 47% of the unemployed are graduates. He also mentioned that the Israeli occupation’s practices through which it dominates and controls all crossings leads to slow import and export movement and the fact that the Palestinian economy depends on the Israeli one contribute to the increase in unemployment rates.

Finally, Dr. Majdalani spoke about the strategy that the Ministry of Labor has suggested in order to reduce unemployment rates among Palestinian graduates. Discussion was also raised between the Minister and the attendants around the same issue.
