Miguel Angel Estrella Plays for Peace
Under the Patronage of An-Najah National University and Munib Almasri Foundation, A concert starring the Argentinean Maestro Miguel Angel Estrella was performed at the auditorium of Zafir Almasri at An-Najah in the presence of the representatives of the local cultural associations, the Fine Arts Faculty members and the citizens of Nablus who took the opportunity to listen to the music of the great pianist.
Prof. Khalil Odeh, the moderator of the event thanked the Maestro Miguel Angel Estrella for his efforts in promoting peace through music that could create harmony between nations. Mrs. Dina Almasri, the Director of the Munib Rashid Almasri Foundation spoke about the importance of organizing such events in Palestine, the land of civilization and struggle, she stressed on the importance of the interaction between global cultures and she wished that the event would be the first of many upcoming cultural events.
Estrella said "I am very happy to be here in Palestine and presenting this concert, music is a great trick that gathers people from different backgrounds on common ground, I am learning a lot by being here on this land in this unique land that smells history, heritage and diversity but also tragedy and reality, we have to keep faith and hope through creativity and the promotion of peace and spirit. Therefore, I have established the Peace Ochestra in Argentina to help and support the Palestinian people who are living in such hard conditions that are worse than the conditions we are living in Argentine. We have to build peace bridges between the different musicians who have different cultures and live together in harmony." Maestro Estrella performed some of the sonatas of Jean Sebastian Bach and Chopin.
Miguel Angel Estrella, one of Argentina's most prestigious classical pianists, has led a life long campaign for the popularization of music among the poorest groups in society. His cooperation with UNESCO dates back to the late 1980s when he was designated Goodwill Ambassador. He is the founder of "Musique Espérance," a foundation which aims to improve access to music for all people, and is designed to defend human dignity and to uplift communities.
Miguel Angel Estrella's relentless engagement has benefited victims of the Chernobyl disaster by raising funds for UNESCO's Chernobyl recovery program. The "Orchestra for Peace", composed of young Arab and Israeli musicians, was also created by Mr Estrella and has given concerts in both France and Luxembourg, to promote UNESCO's ideals and objectives. In 2000, Miguel Angel Estrella received the Nansen Prize, the United Nations Prize for the Three Americas.
Paula, the daughter of the Maestro Miguel Angel Estrella participated in the evening by singing some of her great songs which she used to sing while she was accompanying her father in his tours for peace across the world; France, Switzerland, Italy and Greece.
