Dr. Khaled Demyati, Chairman of the Surgery Department at An-Najah University Hospital, returned from India this week following a visit to the Madanta Institute of Liver Diseases and Transplantation at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital Delhi. He took part in a month’s training course in liver transplants.

Indrapastha Hospital is considered one of the largest liver transplantation centres in the world carrying out as many as 350 successful transplants a year. Dr. Demyati visited the Madanta Institute of Liver Diseases and Transplantation and assisted in liver transplant surgery in infants.

Dr. Demyati also conducted a joint research project on a new technique to assist the restoration of blood supply after surgery. The research will sooner be released in international journals.

Furthermore, he delivered two lectures to the academic and scientific staff at Indrapastha Hospital addressing liver surgery and pancreatic tumors. He was also able to attend the second international conference on liver transplantation in New Delhi, between 23-25 January 2014.

This research-training oriented visit comes as a result of the fellowship programme, sponsored by the Bank of Palestine and in cooperation with Ta’awon Association, to develop the expertise within Palestinian universities. Dr. Demyati thanked the sponsored and stressed the importance of dispatching Palestinian staff of various areas of expertise to keep pace with the continuous scientific advancements, to bring back that learning to Palestine.
