Director of Poison Control Center Participates in a Conference in Sweden
Dr. Ansam Sawalhah, Director of Poison Control and Drug Information Center, at An-Najah National University, participated in the Annual Conference for Poison Centers and Toxicologists held in Stockholm, Sweden from 12-15 May 2009.
Dr. Sawalha presented a research paper on "High Doses of Atropine for Treating Poisoning with Malathion ". In the paper, she concluded that this therapy protocol can be followed based on its usage by the Poison Center successfully. The subject was met by the interest of the audience, as the dose of the atropine was the only way of saving life.
Dr. Sawalhah mentioned that the conference handled many topics such as the treating of poison cases for special groups like children, older people, pregnant women and patients of liver and kidney. It also covered subjects like genetic factors and their role in poisoning, children poisoning from coughing medications, the importance of laboratory tests for guidance of poisoning treatment, over doses of medications, drugs, insecticides and heavy metals as lead, arsenic, nickel, cadmium and mercury.
The conference also handled many other poisoning cases as snake and scorpion stings and methods of treating them. It was tackled matters related to founding poison centers and the variability of their activities, medical errors regard medications, the role of the center in reducing the cost of health care and pregnant women poisoning with lead and other subjects. The municipality of Stockholm hosted the participants in the hall where Nobel Prizes activities were organized as a token of appreciation for the role of the centers and what toxicologists do to save people life.
