On Sunday 8 March, International Woman’s Day, An-Najah National University hosted a ceremony to honour female journalists working in print, electronic, radio and television media formats from the northern West Bank. An-Najah showed its appreciation of their great efforts in serving Palestinian media.

Dr. Abdulkareem Sarhan, Head of the Public Relations Department in the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, welcomed the female journalists to An-Najah, and stressed the important role played by Palestinian women in supporting the men in the fight for freedom. He noted the significance of the day, Women’s Day, an event he described as dedicated to justice for women. Expressing his appreciation for the role they play in the media, supporting the Palestinian cause.

In his speech, Dr. Abdelnasser Al-Najjar, Head of the Palestinian Journalist Union, talked about the importance the Union places on female journalist members. He also referred to the daily Israeli violations against the press in Palestine, asserting the need to keep track and publicise these violations which breach international human rights law.

Mrs. Kholoud Assaf, Head of the Gender Unit in the Union, pointed out that female journalists are a distinct component in Palestinian society and that they share in Palestine’s achievements, joy and sorrows. She went on to state how female journalists play a role in preserving Palestinian culture through the work in their various fields of journalism.

In the same context, Mr. Khaled Mufleh, Acting Director of PR, stressed the unique status of Palestinian woman, especially journalists, and the major role they play serving Palestinian media and the Palestinian cause and revolution.
