A Training Course at the University on Uncertainty Measurement and Calculation
10 May 2010
On May 10th 2010, the Palestine Standards Institution (PSI) organized a training course in cooperation with the Calibration Unit at the University on uncertainty calculation in measurement and calibration. A number of examiners, analysts, technicians, laboratory supervisors as well as those who work in the field of quality control and examinations attended the meeting.
Engineer Osama Melhem, Director of the Metrology Department at the Jordan Institution for Standards and Metrology also attended the event. Melhem has previously won the International Organization of Legal Metrology Award in 2009. The course aimed to train the participants on the mathematical and statistical methods in calculating uncertainty in measurement and calibration.

The course also included defining the concepts of metrology and calibration as well as quality control in addition to a number of scientific terms that are used in metrology. The participants further discussed the sources of error in measurements, random and systematic measurement errors, uncertainty resulting from measurement repeatability, measurement tools, sources of multiple and integrated errors, linear relationship, uncertainty, coverage factor, level of reliability and others.
Engineer Ra'fat Kitaneh, Director of the Calibration Unit and Quality Supervisor at the Construction and Transportation Research Center at the University, mentioned that uncertainty measurement was a major discussion point in the meeting since it is a basic part in determining the level of measurement quality. Mr. Ma'moun Sabah, coordinator of the course, spoke about the Palestine Standards Institution and emphasized the importance of measuring uncertainty and its role in determining the quality of calibration reports that the different companies issue regarding products in Palestine.

"The purpose of this course is to reinforce the ability of Palestinian industry reach other markets in different countries and promote Palestinian products as well as provide accurate tests in the field of measurement" said Engineer Melhem. The course also familiarized the participants with the experience and achievements that Jordan has made in the field of metrology.
