On May 9th 2010, Dr. Ansam Sawalha, Director of the Poison Control and Drug Information Center (PCDIC) at the University, delivered a lecture on snake bite treatment. A number of doctors, nurses and pharmacists attended the meeting.
Dr. Sawalha presented a summary of the problems and threats that snakes pose to humans and discussed the snake species that inhabit Palestine. She also illustrated the components of venom and the symptoms that result from the different bites of different species of snakes. Furthermore, she spoke about the snake bite treatment protocol that is being developed lately between the PCDIC and the Ministry of Health. This protocol provides a breakdown of the symptoms that result from snake bites in Palestine, the cases that require treatment as well as the amount of doses and antidotes that must be used in the cases that require that.
It is important to mention that there is a shortage in the amount of antidotes or antivenoms in Palestine. Dr. Sawalha also said that people should contact the PCDIC in order to get updated data and instructions on how to treat different snake bites since the database of the Center is updated once every three months.
It is important to maintain cooperation between the society and the Center in order for people to be aware of the treatment and prevention measures that, when used, could reduce the fatalities and risks that usually result from snake bites.
