On May 24th 2010, a group of students from the Department of Science Teaching Methods at the Faculty of Educational Sciences at An-Najah participated in a number of seminars with students in the United States. The event was organized in cooperation with the Education Technology Center at An-Najah University, Palestine Technical University and the American Museum of Natural History in New York, United States.
The seminars discussed topics in science with eight hours a week for seven weeks as part of the Teacher Professional Development (TPD) Program at the American Museum of Natural History which was conducted through the internet.
Dr. Ali Zuhdi Shacour, Coordinator of the Education Technology Center at the University, mentioned that the students have successfully finished the seminars under the supervision of Dr. Robert Steiner, Project Director for Seminars on Science at the American Museum of Natural History, an online teacher professional development program that offers 10 courses in life, earth and physical sciences, as well as Dr. Jenny Lando, Assistant Coordinator, Moveable Museum, Department of Education at the American Museum of Natural History.
Several students participated with a number of researches in various fields. One student, Lana Othman, presented a research paper titled "Fish Diversity" in which she discussed several topics related to Ichthyology and fish evolution. Students said that their participation in the seminars was very fruitful and enabled them to know more in the different fields of science, especially since this event gave them the chance to speak to experts and renowned scientists.
In addition to its scientific value, the event also added to the students' social skills and enhanced their interaction abilities with their peers in other countries. This kind of education which depends on modern technology to connect students and teachers from all over the world reinforces the exchange of experience and knowledge between nations, thus enabling students to sharpen their skills in their field of specialization. This combination between theoretical and practical education means that students can link their knowledge with real-life discoveries and facts while at the same time discuss such topics with experts who can provide them both with knowledge and guidance.
Finally, participating in such seminars guarantees that the students have the chance to present their own researches and studies to a wider audience of students, teachers and professional scientists which would help promote their findings and theories among the scientific community.
