Prof. Mason said that Islamophobia in the West comes from fear and lack of understanding of Islam and that it has increased since 9/11.  She motioned that particularly following the events of 9/11 there has been an increase in fear and misunderstanding of Islam in the West, and that greater dialogue between different cultures and religions is necessary.
The event was organized by the University's Public Relations Department.  A lively Q&A session took place following Prof. Mason's talk, which was attended by a large audience of An-Najah's scholars and students.
Prof. Mason is a professor in Middle East Politics and International Relations and is part of the University's Richardson Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution.  She also convenes the interdisciplinary 'Greater Middle East and Islamic Studies Network' seminar series at Lancaster.  Her broad research area is Middle East politics.  She focuses particularly on the Palestinian question, conflict and conflict resolution in the region, and issues relating to migration, refugees and minorities.  Prof. Mason also works on wider issues of human rights, and has written on issues of Islamophobia and anti-Arab discrimination in the West.   of Lancaster University.
Prof. Victoria Mason of the Richardson Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution at Lancaster gave a presentation on "Islamophobia" for the faculty and students of the University today.  "Islamophobia is a growing problem and attitude in the West that should be addressed," said Prof. Mason.
