The Mediterranean Beekeeping Federation (APIMED) recently organized the 10th Mediterranean Beekeeping Forum with the support of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation and (FELCOS Umbria) Foundation, and under the auspices of the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture. The forum focused on the beekeeping sector in the Mediterranean area and its future challenges, risks, and opportunities.


An-Najah National University's participants were a group of an academic ‎staff: Dr. Amjad Hussein and Mrs. Asmaa AL-Asmar (APCC Center), ‎Dr. Abdel Fattah Rasem Hassan (Water and Environmental Studies ‎Institute (WESI)), Dr. Heba M. Al-Fares, Dr. Sameh Abuseir and Dr. ‎Mohammed Sabbah (Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine), ‎and Dr. Imad Hussein (An-Najah National Hospital).‎

During the forum which was held over two days from 30th November - ‎‎1st December 2019 at the Palestine Red Crescent Society in Ramallah, ‎several research papers were presented and discussed regarding the ideas ‎and strategies that could affect the enhancement of Mediterranean honey ‎and improve bee breeding locally and globally.‎

The forum included four sessions: Climate and Environment, Production ‎and Market, Traditions and New horizons, and Local policies in support ‎of beekeeping.‎

In the “Production and Market” session, Dr. Amjad Hussein, Director of ‎the APCC Center at the University, presented a research paper titled ‎‎"Antibiotics Detection in Honey Samples from Palestine Market".  He ‎discussed the results of the research as being carried out in collaboration ‎with Dr. Abdel Fattah Rasem Hassan, Director of WESI at the University, ‎and with the support of (FELCOS Umbria) Foundation as part of 'BEE ‎THE CHANGE' Project.‎

Dr. Imad Hussein, a member of the Palestinian Economic Policy Research ‎Institute (MAS), presented a research paper titled “Market Study on ‎Honey in Palestine.”  He discussed the increased domestic demand and ‎resulting increased rate of imported pure honey to Palestine, the ‎importance of the legal framework for the honey production and ‎marketing, and the major obstacles and challenges that face the honey ‎production sector.‎

Dr. Abuseir presented two research papers titled "Climate Change and its ‎Possible Effects on Apiculture in Palestine, the Land of Milk and Honey”, ‎and "Beekeeping in Palestine. Current status, Problems and Challenges". ‎He discussed the role of climate change and environmental changes on ‎food availability, especially beekeeping in Palestine. He also referred to ‎the current situation of the honey bee sector in Palestine, and clarified the ‎problems and challenges of Palestinian beekeepers.‎
