The Palestinian Institute of Public Diplomacy (PIPD) and German NGO Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) organized the Model United Nations Conference 2019 for Palestinian universities at the Caesar Hotel in Ramallah on November 29th and 30th.  The Conference was attended by MUN teams from Birzeit, Bethlehem, Al Quds, Arab American, and An Najah Universities.

The two day conference focused on the critical issue of climate change and included four MUN official sessions, of which two were chaired by An Najah delegates.  50 delegates were in attendance representing 21 countries.  During the final official session of the conference, an official resolution was written and voted upon by all delegations.  That resolution was led by multiple countries’ delegations including Indonesia and Palestine, both represented by An Najah University students.  Upon conclusion of all activities, the University staff coordinators and all student delegates had the opportunity to select the delegation they perceived most prepared, maintaining best interpersonal relations and team work, and carrying out the best overall performance at the Conference.  The winning delegation represented Palestine and from the An Najah University MUN team.  The Best Delegation included Fadi Basha of the Medical Faculty, Zayna Ibrahim of the Faculty of Medicine’s Doctor of Pharmacy Department, and Ziad Hassiba of the Faculty of Economics and Social Studies’ Political Science Department.

Reflecting on the conference, Ziad noted how ‘the conference was eye opening, and an exciting yet practical experience in real life negotiations.  Throughout the two days, my delegation and I had to lobby support of a climate change resolution we co-wrote with many delegations from different countries we had never met before.  It took a lot of effort to meet the many diverse priorities of countries from across the world, from developed and developing countries alike.  In the end, we were very happy to see the resolution we co-sponsored, with the Delegation of Indonesia and other countries, to pass with full, unanimous support by all countries present.’

The Delegation of Indonesia received an honorable mention by the Conference Committee for their outstanding resolution and success it getting passed. The Delegation of the United States also received an honorable mention for being well prepared and maintaining a high level of decorum throughout the conference. Both of these country delegations were represented by the An Najah MUN team.

Although there have been previous Model UN conferences held in the West Bank, this is the first one attended by students of An-Najah National University's newly formed MUN team.  The NNU MUN team has plans to build off of this recent success in the Spring 2020 academic semester.
