The International Youth Exchange Programme (Zajel) of An-Najah's Public Relations Department has recently organized a cultural trip to Istanbul, Turkey during the period November 15 – November 20, 2018. The trip aimed at introducing Turkey's long and rooting history and culture as well as learning about the Turkish life and its cultural, social and economic features and boosting cultural tourism.


The trip started with visiting the Istanbul Military Museum which is dedicated to one thousand years of Turkish military history. A fine collection of historical weapons, uniforms and tools of various periods of the army are on display. Outside the museum, interesting Ottoman cannons and mortars, a rail gun, aircraft, helicopters are on display.

The trip included a visit to the Panorama 1453 Historical Museum, a historical museum in Istanbul that was opened on 31 January 2009. The museum shows the conquering of the city of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire, by the troops of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror on 29 May 1453. The participants attended a magical show of the war's events and watched the destroyed walls of Constantinople.

To learn about the history of the Ottoman Empire, the participants visited the Ottoman Archives Museum which includes a collection of historical sources related to the Ottoman Empire and a total of 39 nations whose territories one time or the other were part of this Empire, including 19 nations in the Middle East, 11 in the EU and Balkans, three in the Caucasus, two in Central Asia, Cyprus, as well as Palestine and the Republic of Turkey.

To learn about tourism life and its role in supporting the Turkish economy, the participants visited several famous Turkish markets including the Spice Bazaar and the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world.

The participants were also introduced to Taksim Square and the İstiklal Avenue, one of the most famous avenues in Istanbul visited by nearly 3 million people in a single day over the course of weekends. Located in the historic Beyoğlu (Pera) district, it is an elegant pedestrian street, 1.4 kilometers long, which houses boutiques, music stores, bookstores, art galleries, cinemas, theatres, libraries, cafés, pubs, historical patisseries and restaurants.

The visit was concluded on Friday while the participants said their prayers at the Blue Mosque (Called Sultanahmet Camii in Turkish), a popular tourist site. The participants also went to Sultanahmet District in Istanbul, the heart of historic Old Istanbul, what 19th-century travelers used to call "Stamboul"; it is where one will find historical and cultural treasures.

The trip also included a visit to the Topkapı Palace, a large museum in Istanbul which served as the main residence and administrative headquarters of the Ottoman sultans in the 15th century. In Taksim Square, the participants visited a museum that embodies the Turkish War of Independence fought between the Turkish National Movement and the proxies of the Allies; namely, Greece on the Western front, Armenia on the Eastern, France on the Southern and with them, the United Kingdom and Italy in Constantinople (now Istanbul) one hundred years ago.


Marine tourism was also part of the trip programme as Zajel organized a tour through the Bosporus, a narrow, natural strait and an internationally significant waterway located in northwestern Turkey. It forms part of the continental boundary between Europe and Asia, and separates Asian Turkey from European Turkey. From there, the participants saw palaces of the Ottoman sultans, the Maiden's Tower, Anadoluhisarı, known historically as Güzelce Hisar, Rumelihisarı or Boğazkesen Castle and the Golden Horn Gulf.


Finally, the participants went to Miniatürk which is a miniature park situated at the north-eastern shore of the Golden Horn in Istanbul and concluded their trip at Istanbul Aquarium which holds a leading position among worldwide aquariums thanks to its volume, variety of fish species and the activities on travel routes. Visitors follow a geographical route that includes 16 themes and 1 rainforest going from the Black Sea towards the Pacific.

Through these trips, Zajel aims at encouraging cultural diversity among An-Najah students and graduates as they are introduced annually to several global civilizations.
