On Wednesday, April 18th, 2018, the Media Centre and the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at An-Najah organized the Impact of Social Media on Electronic Media ‎Conference. The conference participants recommended monitoring of social media in order to preserve Palestinian unity, increase professional journalism and raising awareness of social media and its impact. They also referred to the several challenges that face journalism which have emerged from the wide spread use of social media.


The event took place at the Prince Turki Bin Abdul-Aziz Theatre in the New Campus under the patronage of His Excellency the Prime Minister, Professor Rami Hamdallah.

The event was attended by Dr. Ihab Bseiso, Palestine Minister of Culture Affairs who represented the Prime Minister, Prof. Maher Natsheh, Acting President of An-Najah, General Manager Akram Rajoub, the Governor of Nablus, Dr. Sameh Atout, Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, Engineer Ghazi Mortaja, Director of the Media Centre at An-Najah and the Spouse of the Prime Minister as well as other notable guests and attendees.

In the opening speech, Prof. Natsheh welcomed the attendees and commended the Media Centre and the Faculty of Economics’ role in promoting the true story of the Palestinian cause.

He mentioned that the world has become a small village due to social media, hence comes the conference which deals with the media chaos and tries to employ it to serve Palestine and its cause.

Mr. Rajoub mentioned that social media is currently affecting people more than journalism does; therefore, it is necessary to reduce the negative impact of social media on the community.

He stated: "Some social media fake news confuses the reader whereas others are tools to serve the Israeli occupation."

Dr. Atout said that the social media revolution has affected politics, culture and community in general.

In turn, Dr. Bseiso talked about the importance of media in conveying Palestine's mission to the world. He said, "We are responsible for steering social media towards positive roles."

He concluded with, "An-Najah National University has maintained its academic status among Arab and international universities. Through establishing the Media Centre, the University met its mission and plans and therefore holds conferences that serve our homeland and its cause."

Mr. Hicham Nassif, Supervisor at Al-Jazeera's Social Media Department and the conference keynote speaker delivered a speech on how social media has affected the working environment at the Al-Jazeera network studio.

The conference included four sessions which shed light on language in electronic media and social media and its characteristics, e-media, social media sites and trusted news sources, electronic media and communication platforms, fake news and conflicting priorities on the Internet.

The conference resulted in a number of recommendations, most important of which were setting a strategy to benefit from social media, setting a system that creates balance between freedom of expression and professional work on social media platforms, and raising awareness of social media for school and university students and the community in general.

The participants suggested employing social media to serve electronic media in order to ensure that news doesn't include fake information and holding conferences and workshops to raise awareness on this matter.

Finally, they stressed the importance of family and community education in directing citizens towards the positive and productive use of social media.
