An Najah Organizes the 1st International Palestine Open Debate Championship
On Thursday, December 28th, 2017, An-Najah's Office of International Development and External Affairs organized the 1st International Palestine Open Debate Championship.
The championship was an all-day tournament that included three debate rounds followed by a final round with 16 debate teams from across Palestine and internationally.
The tournament followed the British Parliamentary debate system which is also the official system used by the World Universities Debate Championship, the largest English debate championship in the world.
The style of debate demands intensive research of all current events and world politics. Teams receive the motion to be debated only 15 minutes before the live debate starts. After the first three debate rounds, the 16 teams are ranked based on their performances during those rounds and the top four teams go on to the final round. Two teams from An Najah made it to the finals with Sana Aslan and Iman Saraj of An-Najah placing second and Dalia Al-Issa and Reem Ayaydeh from Al Quds Bard College placing first.
The event included expert debate judges lead by Mariel Golden and also included Iyad Ghazal, Kaya Sittinger along with other international and Palestinian experts in debate.
