Engineer Iyad Ghazal, Research and Teaching Assistant at An-Najah's Architecture Department has recently participated in the REMENA Youth Winter Academy on Renewable Energies and Energy Security.

The event was organized by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung–REMENA in Germany and was over 10 days from November 23rd – December 3rd, 2017 in Rabat, Morocco.


The Academy was attended by 80 participants from Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa who were engineers, businessmen and lawyers holding BAs, MAs and PhDs.

The Academy was also attended by a group of decision makers and experts in renewable energy and energy security who presented a number of Arab and international experiences in this field. They discussed the prospects and reality of sustainability and renewable energy in the region in general and in Morocco, the host country, in particular. In Morocco, The renewable energy forms 30% of its total energy and will reach more than 50% by 2030.

The Academy also addressed sustainable urban planning and eco-friendly cities with Zenata in Morocco and King Abdul-Aziz City in Saudi Arabia as models.

The third day of the Academy included a field trip to Marrakesh and Al-Ghurair Renewable Energy Research Station, which is a pioneering centre in solar energy research in the region. The participants learned about the latest technological developments in the field of solar energy and photovoltaics.

The Academy was concluded by holding a competition on proposing a policy paper to address a specific problem in the region and propose solutions with addressing official bodies. Eng. Ghazal participated with a team of engineers from Oman, Algeria, Tunisia and Palestine to present a policy paper titled: "Encourage the Green Buildings in MENA Region".

It is worth mentioning that Eng. Ghazal team was one of the top three winners of the competition.
