The Department of Sociology and Social Work at An-Najah hosted a seminar titled: “Women and Armed Conflict” at the library’s conference room in the Old Campus.


The seminar shed light on the importance of documenting women experience in zones of armed conflict. Dr. Carol Mann, Researcher at Universite Paris-8 talked about the experience of women under siege in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Taliban treatment of women in Afghanistan.

The seminar also included discussing Palestinian models of women under the Israeli occupation.

The seminar was also attended by Dr. Alia Assali, Dean of the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Teacher Training and Dr. Samah Saleh, Head of the Sociology and Social Work Department and the event moderator as well as other notable attendees.

Carol Mann has been working for nearly twenty years on issues linked to gender and contemporary warfare. She was a researcher and consultant, author of numerous articles and books and also as director of a humanitarian agency FemAid based in Paris (founded in 2000) which has projects for women and children in warzones.
