On Tuesday, December 13th, 2016, The International Development and External Affairs Office at An-Najah in cooperation with the American Consulate General in Jerusalem held a special musical concert for the American hip hop artist and social activist Ms Aisha Fukushima and her band at the Zafer Al-Masri Auditorium in the Old Campus.


The event was attended by Dr. Mohammad El-Amleh, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Alia Assali, Dean of the Faculty of Educational Sciences and Teacher Training; Ms Suzan Qaryouti, Senior Programme Specialist at the American Consulate General Jerusalem Public Affairs Office; Ms Alia Gilbrecht, Coordinator of the American Corner Nablus of the International Office and Ms Shatha Jararaa from the Public Relations Department at An-Najah as well as a large group of the university and local school students.

Dr. El-Amleh welcomed Ms Fukushima and her band in Nablus and said that this event tries to fill the gaps between the different cultures such as the American and the Palestinian.

The event included a number of performances songs and rap, by Ms Fukushima in English, Arabic and French. She sang a poem for the popular Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish titled: “We Have on this Earth What Makes Life Worth Living”. At the end, she invited talented students who can sing, beat box or dance to share the stage with her.

The concert also included a special break dance performance by Nablus based dance group stereo 48.

As a social educator from Oakland, California, Ms Fukushima uses music as the vehicle to explore and propel social justice, empowerment and solidarity across the world like no one else.  She has traveled the globe including to such countries as France, Morocco, Japan, Germany, South Africa and English among many others where she has impacted countless people through her music.
