On Tuesday, October 4th, 2016, the IT departments at An-Najah National University concluded the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest which sponsored by PalTel at the Korean-Palestinian IT Institute for Excellence in the New Campus.


The two days contest was hosted for the first time in Palestine at An-Najah and included 9 Palestinian universities; namely, An-Najah National University, Birzeit University, Palestine Polytechnic University, Hebron University, Palestine Technical University – Kadoorie, Arab American University, Bethlehem University, Al-Quds Open University and Al-Quds University as well as the Tulkarem Secondary Industrial School.

The contesters competed for 5 hours, after which the university and PalTel held a ceremony to honor the winners.

The UP team from the Palestine Polytechnic University was ranked first place and BZU Monsters team from Birzeit University was ranked second. The third, fourth and fifth places went to C-Coders team from Birzeit University, Avengers from the Arab American University and Strike from AN-Najah respectively.

In the ceremony, Dr. Khaled Al-Sahli, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and IT commended the contesters’ performance and thanked AN-Najah staff and PalTel for offering support to contribute to the contest success.

In turn, Dr. Musa Rafay’ah, Coordinator of ACM in Palestine thanked An-Najah for well organizing the event and stressed the importance of improving the contest arrangements in the coming years.

At the end of the ceremony, the winners were awarded certificates.

Notes:

  • ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest is a team competition that was established in 1970. Current rules stipulate that each team consist of three students. Participants must be university students, who have had less than five years of university education before the contest.
    During contest, the teams are given 5 hours to solve between 8 and 12 programming problems (with 8 typical for regionals and 10 for finals). They must submit solutions as programmes in C, C++, Java or Python.
  • The ceremony was also attended by Dr. Amjad Hawash, Head of the IT Department at An-Najah in addition to other notable guests and attendees.
