On Tuesday, April 26th, 2016, the International Development and External Affairs Office at An-Najah hosted Mr. Reubin Gauci, Representative of Malta to the Palestinian Authority and Dr. Immanuel Mifsud, renowned Maltese Writer and winner of the European Union Award for Literature 2011.


The delegation was received by Dr. Mohammad Amleh, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dr. Sabri Nasser, Vice President for Administrative Affairs who gave a brief introduction on the history of An-Najah, its academic programmes, and the recent international accreditation. Both parties then discussed means of future cooperation, in terms of student and staff exchange in addition to hosting a cultural exhibition on Malta at An-Najah in the near future.

 Afterwards, Dr. Mifsud gave a lecture titled “Maltese Literature: Past and Present” at the library’s conference room in the Old Campus, where he talked about the evolution of Maltese literature throughout the different historical periods. He also recited a poem in old Maltese language which was greatly influenced by the Arabic language and one of his poems which talked about the refugees’ crisis.

Dr. Mifsud also talked about the Maltese independence and its effect on Maltese literature and explained the environmental problems that encounter Malta as an isolated Iceland and the technological developments that lead to integrating the area with the outside world.

The guests were also given a tour of both the university’s campuses and the old city of Nablus.

  • The lecture was also attended by Dr. Abdul Khaliq Issa, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities; Dr. Ekrema Shhab, Head of the English Language Department, Dr. Amer Al-Qubbaj, Head of the History and Geography Department, Dr. Edwan Edwan  and Ms Karam Abu Ghazaleh from the International Office at An-Najah.
