The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2023 focuses on sustainability, measuring universities' commitment to community development and environmental preservation, as well as their dedication to eco-friendly practices and awareness initiatives within campus and the wider community.

Furthermore, the assessment seeks to inspire universities to contribute to sustainable development goals by implementing policies, programs, and initiatives aligned with the three key pillars of sustainability: social, environmental, and economic. The aim is to ensure the longevity of efforts in addressing global challenges.

This year's UI GreenMetric World University Rankings attracted a record-breaking 1,183 universities from 84 countries, including new participants from Burkina Faso, Kosovo, Liberia, and Uruguay. The assessment encompasses three core areas—environmental, economic, and social value—evaluating indicators such as setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water usage, transportation, education, and research.
