An-Najah National University (ANNU) has institutionalized a comprehensive and recurring Energy Review Program designed to systematically identify and address areas of highest energy wastage across all campuses. These reviews form a cornerstone of the University’s Energy Efficiency and Climate Action Strategy, aligning with national energy goals and the UN SDG 7 targets for affordable and clean energy.

Energy and Climate Change Research UnitThe energy review is conducted annually by the Energy and Climate Change Research Unit, in cooperation with the Engineering and Maintenance Department and Faculty of Engineering and IT, ensuring a data-driven, multidisciplinary, and evidence-based approach to energy performance improvement.

1. Objectives of the Energy Review

  • Identify Critical Energy Loss Points: Evaluate all buildings and utilities to locate energy-intensive systems, operational inefficiencies, and uncontrolled energy losses.

  • Establish Performance Benchmarks: Compare energy consumption patterns against international standards (ASHRAE, ISO 50001) to guide corrective action.

  • Support Net-Zero Targets: Directly contribute to the University’s Net-Zero Carbon Target 2028, ensuring continuous reductions in Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

  • Promote Community Benefit: Reallocate surplus renewable energy produced on campus to nearby rural areas lacking electricity access, advancing social sustainability alongside energy efficiency.

2. Methodology and Review Process

The University’s Energy Audit Framework combines quantitative measurements with qualitative assessments through:

  • Smart Meter Data Analysis: Continuous monitoring of building-level electricity use via IoT-enabled meters integrated into the Najah²Twin Smart Campus System.

  • Thermal Imaging Surveys: Identification of heat-loss zones and insulation deficiencies in major facilities using infrared thermography.

  • Appliance and HVAC Efficiency Testing: Field measurements of laboratory, office, and classroom appliances to assess energy draw and standby losses.

  • Load Profiling: Hourly analysis of consumption patterns to detect non-essential nighttime or idle-hour energy usage.

  • Benchmarking by Function: Energy intensity (kWh/m² and kWh/person) compared across faculties (Science, Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture, etc.) to prioritize retrofit actions.
