Access Schemes for People with Disabilities

An-Najah National University runs targeted access schemes that help people with disabilities enter university, succeed in their studies and progress into employment. Coordinated by the Disability Support Office (DSO), these schemes support each person at every stage, from secondary school to graduation and beyond, in line with the University’s Disability Access and Inclusion Policy and its Equitable and Inclusive Student Admissions Policy.

1. Outreach to schools and families

  • The DSO holds regular meetings with parents and secondary school students with disabilities to introduce them to University programmes, support services and scholarships, particularly the Scholarship Fund for Students with Disabilities.

  • The Computer Lab for the Blind offers computer training to students from schools and residential institutions, preparing them for university study.

  • The DSO supports families with information and advice, and connects them with relevant medical, legal, social and psychological services.

2. Support with admission and registration

  • The DSO assists applicants with disabilities throughout the admission and registration process.

  • Registration guides and instructions are available in Braille.

  • Reasonable accommodations are provided in admission procedures and tests, in line with the University’s admissions policy.

  • Applicants with disabilities can contact the DSO before applying to discuss their needs and the support available.

3. Scholarships and financial support

  • A dedicated Scholarship Fund for Students with Disabilities covers all or part of tuition fees.

  • Students with disabilities are given priority in the University’s financial aid, scholarship and loan programmes.

  • Targeted scholarship opportunities are offered in partnership with external organisations, such as scholarships for girls, including girls with disabilities, at Hisham Hijjawi College of Technology. Read more | Scholarships for students with disabilities

4. Support to succeed in their studies

Once enrolled, students with disabilities receive individual support tailored to their needs, including academic mentoring, assistive technologies, sign language interpreters, readers, scribes and note-takers, accessible learning materials, extra tuition and examination accommodations. 5. Pathways to employment

  • The DSO works with local institutions to create employment opportunities for graduates with disabilities and support their entry into the labour market.

  • The University recruits qualified staff with disabilities and provides reasonable adjustments and assistive devices in the workplace.

Results

  • Between 2019 and 2024, 96% of applicants with disabilities were admitted, and all of them received financial aid.

  • 88 new students with disabilities enrolled in the 2024–2025 academic year.

  • Around 450 students and 48 employees with disabilities currently benefit from the University’s support services and facilities.
